Hello and welcome to my brand new interview series – ‘Meet the Working Mum.’ In these interviews you will get a chance to meet other working mum’s, find out what they do, what they like and don’t like about being a working mum and what tips they have to help make life run a bit smoother.
I am looking at having a new Interview every Tuesday so don’t forget to come every week to meet a new mum.
So to the first interview:
Introduction – a little bit about you, your family and where you live.
My name is Kelly Robinson. I am 28 years old and am the fiancée of a hardworking, supportive, wonderful man. We have two children together, Freddy who was born August 2012 and Evie who was born March 2015. My children are my inspiration for my books and my blog. In March 2014 we decided to make a huge move from Essex to the beautiful rolling hillsides of Wales. We wanted our children to spend their childhood exploring the great outdoors and thought Wales would be the perfect place for this.
What do you do for a job? Is it what you have always wanted to do?
I am currently building 3 career paths. One is my blog, the other is my children’s books which I write and illustrate and my third is a business which has been built by my partner and myself, It is an eco clothing line. I worked and studied most of my life to become an environmental scientist but after my children where born, both with health issues I had to find work which I could do from home.
What was your motivation to return to work?
I am hugely motivated especially when it comes to my career. I love being a mother but I have to use my brain.
How many hours do you work a week?
I work entirely around my children and can work until the early hours of the morning. I roughly work 40-50 hours a week.
Do you have to travel far from where you live to where you work?
Not unless I am exploring a new exciting place which I will then blog about.
What do you do for childcare? Does this work for you?
We live over 200 miles from family and we couldn’t afford child care so I work around my two. Its exhausting but worth it.
What does your morning routine look like? What do you do to get you all out of the house on time?
Its actually much more laid back than I thought it would be. My son rolls out of bed about 7.30am then we all have breakfast, get dressed then drive to school.
What do you like about being a working mum?
I love the fact that I spend as much time as possible with my children but I also get to do the things I am passionate about.
What don’t you like about being a working mum?
The amount of time I don’t rest or sleep. I tend to get 3 to 4 hours sleep a night or less if my partner is working overnights. I could do with some rest now and again.
What would you change?
I would love someone to work with. We are hoping to open an eco coffee shop in the future so I am excited about hopefully having some work colleagues.
What three tips would you pass onto a mum about to start back at work?
If you want to work from home then just give it a go, It is hard work but very rewarding too.
Now time for something fun – show us a picture of your work handbag – what make is it and what’s the most unworkable thing in it?
Haha I think most women will think I am insane but I don’t actually have a handbag. My daughter has a rucksack with her nappies and wipes in and I put my cards in my phone and then in my pocket! I would love a bag but have never got around to getting one. Too busy working 😉
I often miss the working environment. Leaving the house, working away from the children and having coffee breaks and work gossip. But my children are only small for a little while and I will be back into a work place again once my youngest is in school. I do feel I have the best of both worlds, although I would love to earn more money and to have more sleep.
Wow Kelly, you are certainly one busy mum! Thank you for taking part in this interview series and being our first Meet the Mum.

The lack of sleep is a killer – I agree! #marvmondays
Wow 3-4 hours sleep a night!! That’s dedication. You must work really hard. I know what you mean about having to use your brain though…kids are fun but drive you nuts xx #marvmondayss
I’d love to be able to work from home around my children. The long hours and lack of sleep does sound hard though. #marvmondays
