I love any opportunity to use something that is meant for one thing but you can end up using it for something else. And that is certainly what I have done with the fab pens from Stationery Island.
I first came across these chalk marker pens when I was looking for something to use for our new blackboard. You can read about how I created our fab kitchen blackboard here.
Since we have had the pens, not only have we all had a tonne of fun drawing wonderful creations on our chalk board, I have been able to create my lists and I have also discovered I can use them to help me stay a bit more organised around the house.
Below are four of my favourite alternative way’s to use Stationery Island around the house:
Number 1 – helping to remember when I put the leftovers in the fridge!
I don’t know about you but I am forever having the conversation with the hubby asking ‘when did we put these tinned peaches in the fridge’ or the ‘how long have we had these beans?’ Well these pens have certainly helped us out with that. After popping the leftovers into a suitable plastic container I then use the pens to write on the side the day/date and hey presto, no more wasting food becuase I have no idea how old it is!
Number 2 – helping to identify frozen meals
This is a bit like number 1 but again it stops me playing ‘what’s for tea’ roulette when I pick out tubs from the freezer. Just like above, when I am tupperwaring up the leftovers for the freezer I use the pens to write on the lids what is in them. No more is that spag Bol, chilli or ragu sauce guess work. Anything for a simple life!
Number 3 – helping to organise the kids clothes
We are lucky having two girls as I can recycle their clothes, but what is hard work is keeping track of what sizes are in what box that I have put in the loft. This is where the pens come in handy. I just write on the side of the tubs and can see at a glance what is where and grab what I need. When I want to swap the clothes around in the tubs I can just wipe the pen off and re-write.
As you can see from the pics I tried labels in the past but they are such a pain to get off, the pens are so much easier, a quick wipe and you can update them.
Number 4 – The pens also work on glass!
We use glass containers in our kitchen cupboards to hold some of our regular larder ingrediants. I use the pens to label up the containers so when we replenish our stock I know what needs to go where.
Stationery Island have a wide selection of wet wipe or dry wipe chalk markers, all of which can be used on blackboards, plastics, metal, ceramics and glass. To see their full range click here.

I haven’t come across these before, they are fab! Not only are they brilliant for the girls to use on their blackboard. But, I love that idea for labelling up the boxes of the girls clothes. I do the same pop Alice’s away in a box, but I have no clue which box is which. I am definitely doing this, thanks for sharing. x #picknmix

Great tips! We are currently renovating our downstairs living area, including a new open plan kitchen/diner. There is a little slither of wall, that is perfect for a family chalkboard – to write notes, lists and things to do on it! I need some pens like this, they’d be perfect!

Our chalkboard has worked really well for us, and having it on the side of the kitchen cabinet means we can all access it – the kids for their doodles and to practice their writing and me and hubby to create our lists. Thanks for popping by and good luck with the rest of your renovation. X

Oh my goodness I hadn’t even thought of all the things you could use them for besides a blackboard!

My mum bought herself some chalk pens a few months ago and I thought then what a great idea they are. I’d never thought about using them for all those other purposes too though. Fab! #BloggerClubUK

I love chalkboard pens. I’ve just reorganised my baking draws but they are all labelled in white and it’s so boring!

What a great idea to use these for boxes of kids clothes! I bag the same size up together, and just use a sticky label before shoving them in a box, but this is so much neater. Thanks so much for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

I love chalk pens! I never thought to write on tupperware!
I once wrote on the side of my fridge freezer and even with layers of bleach, it’s still there!

I am one of those people that wonder’s how long has these beans / sweetcorn been in here for… These look like a handy solution.

I had no idea you could use them in all those places – I’ve been thinking for ages about how to label my left over baked beans (and yes I am being completely serious as marker pens don’t work!). Top tip thank you. I need those pens now!
