Family life can be very busy! In between doing the school runs, work, kids clubs and putting tea on the table every night, our houses can get neglected. And the last thing we want to do at the weekend is spend all our time tidying and wasting precious family time. In this post I have five things you can do today to improve your daily routine, and start to reclaim some of your weekend family time.
At the beginning of January I posted about a Working Mum’s Declutter Plan. It is based on spending just 15 minutes a day decluttering which helps to make it feel more manageable. If you gave this plan a go I would love to hear how you got on.
Decluttering is a good start to getting our houses in order. But there is still the every day stuff that life creates that needs sorting. To manage this, here are the five things I do as part of my daily routine to keep on top of it.
1. Do a 10 minute tidy up every day
Every day after we have all had tea, and before we get the girls ready for bed, I do a 10 minute whole house tidy up. I go from room to room and pick up stuff that doesn’t belong in that room, and put it away. Each room also gets a quick tidy up. You know the kind of thing, putting all the cushions back on the sofa and picking up the random shoe that has ended up by the back door.
2. Never leave a room empty handed.
I do this throughout the whole day. If I’m going downstairs I always take any mugs and glasses that are upstairs into the kitchen. When I leave the lounge I pick up any toys that belong in the playroom and put them away. This helps to just keep on top of things and makes the 10 minute tidy up at the end of the day a lot more efficient.
3. Deal with all paperwork as soon as you get it.
As soon as the post arrives I open it, put the envelopes in recycling and decide what needs to be done with the contents. If it needs dealing with or filing I put it in my paperwork folder, which I deal with once a week. If it needs disposing off I put it in our log burner paper burning pile.
I am the same with any paperwork that comes home from school. As soon as I get home I empty the girls bags to check for any letters. If there are any that need a signature I do it there and then and put it straight back into their bags so it can be handed in the next day. I will then add any important dates to the calendar on the wall in the kitchen and on my phone. I also reply straight away to party invites, after checking that the girls are free to attend.
4. Do one load of laundry a day.
As soon as the girls are in the bath I check their uniform from that day, and then put on a washing machine load. The following morning I then unload the washing machine and sort through and dry the contents. This really helps to stay on top of the laundry, and there isn’t a mad rush on a Sunday to make sure all the uniform is washed and ready to go. I have got more tips on tackling laundry in my laundry – love it or loathe it post.
5. Prepare for the next day the night before.
On school nights I always make up the packed lunches and hang up the uniform needed for the next day. I also make sure everything is back in the school bags. I also get my work clothes out and anything else I need for the next day, like gym kit if I’m going straight to a circuits class. This really does make a massive difference in the mornings, and it certainly is one less thing to think about.
Is there anything that you do everyday in your daily routine to help make things a bit easier for you? Please share in the comments below, I am always looking for ways to make my life simpler.
Lets get organised!
