Welcome to Meet the Working Mum Interview. Today we meet Lianne Harris. Lianne works as Legal Advisor and can be found blogging at Mrs Mummy Harris.
If you have missed any of the previous interviews, or if you are new to this series, check out all the other Meet the Working Mum’s.
An intro and a little bit about you, your family and where you live.
I’m Lianne Harris and live with Hubby, Ben and our two cats Harley and Leo in Harlow Essex. I currently only just returned to work to a brand new job rather than returning to my old company.
What do you do for a job? Is it what you have always wanted to do?
I am a Legal Advisor for a Law Firm specialising in Personal Injury Car accidents where it is either a Low Velocity or alleged Fraudulant claim. But no, I’m not one of those who phone and harass you to make a claim!!!
What was your motivation to return to work?
My Post Natal Depression was what made me want to return to work. I needed to be me again – not a mum 24/7. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ben and love spending time with him, but I couldnt be a SAH parent – hats off to you folk that do it!
How many hours do you work a week?
I work 35 hours, but I do it over 4 days. I have Wednesdays off so it isn’t too much time away from little man!
Do you have to travel far from where you live to where you work?
Not really, the bus stop is at the top of the road and its 40 minutes away so its not too bad.
If you use public transport what do you do to pass the time on your commute?
Blog-min of course!! On the way there I use the time to do my make-up as I love my sleep too much to do it before I leave the house and on the way back I normally do my linky’s .
What do you do for childcare? Does this work for you?
My MIL babysits and it works a treat. Ben adores his nan and his grandad usually pops home for a bit so he gets to hang out with them and get lots of attention and be spoilt. They do his breakfast and get him ready for bed so when its a work day we get more time to play with him rather than have to feed him etc. More quality time I suppose!
What does your morning routine look like? What do you do to get you all out of the house on time?
The alarm goes off at 5.45am and at 6am I actually get out of bed to get showered. Once I’m out and dressed it is Hubby’s turn in the bathroom. Once we’re both dressed Hubby feeds the cats and I wake Ben up and change his nappy. We leave the house anytime between 6.45am and 6.55am so I can get the 7.13am bus.
What do you like about being a working mum?
I love that it enables me to be me. I’m not Ben’s mum, I’m not stuck indoors being a house wife and it keeps me sane. It gives me a sense of purpose other than bringing my child up to be a gentleman.
What don’t you like about being a working mum?
It’s long days. I dont get home til nearly 7.30pm which sucks, but it does mean that I have one day off a week with Ben (although he has been asleep for over two hours napping already!!!)
What would you change? Hours you work, commute you have to make etc.
Right now I’m thinking I may ask for a longer lunch as I only have 45 minutes and if I go for lunch with people I feel pressured to rush whereas that extra 15 minutes gives me a bit more time. I’d still get the same bus home so in that sense it’s a no brainer!
What three tips would you pass onto a mum about to start back at work?
1) Try to remain positive. Think of the good things like hot drinks on tap, adult conversation that isn’t baby related, and unaccompanied loo breaks. They can make the day go alot quicker and easier for you.
2) Go out and get some new stuff whether it be new work clothes/shoes/bag etc. it gives you again something to look forward to.
3) download something to watch at lunch or if you dont drive to work you can watch it on your commute. It gives you time to space out and not overthink and worry or stress about going back or how baby is doing without you.
For fun show us a picture of your work handbag – what make is it and what’s the most unworkable thing in it I.e. Kids hair accessories, toy cars etc.
Things in it – Kids hair accessories, toy cars etc.
I got this for Christmas and the bigger bag is actually one my MIL left around here and I’ve stolen it now hahaha!! It is all workable other than snacks I suppose! I’m too practical so it is all either work or blogging related.
Thank you so much for taking part in the Meet the Mum interview series Lianne. It sounds like you have a lovely routine going on. I like that your Mother In Law helps getting little one ready for bed so you have more time with your son at the end of the day.
